On Tuesday September 26th, the Ministry of Labor announced $90 million dollar of investment into the Ontario Skills Development fund (SDF) to aid the impending skill labor shortage in the province. The program supports innovative projects that increase workers and job seekers skills and knowledge to improve their career choices.

The focus is on unemployed or underemployed with attempt to up skill their abilities given them a greater chance to improve career. The program targets unemployed, underemployed, and at-risk youths with disabilities, Indigenous people, Ukrainian newcomers, and others that face barriers to employment.

Targets sector and occupations also include skilled trade and technical occupation:

  • Skilled trade & technical occupation in high demand.
  • Sectors experience labor shortage challenges (Including COVID), sectors with unmet demand and talent gaps

The program starts on September 29th and will close on January 31st, 2023. The eligible applicants include:

  • Employers with the presence of Ontario
  • Apprenticeship training agents
  • Non-profit organizations
  • Professional, Industry or Employer Association
  • Trade Unions or Unions Affiliated Organizations
  • Municipalities
